Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 NIV
A couple once had the joy of marrying off two of their boys. One of the boys married a sweet caring young lady that happily joined in whatever the family was up to. She was the first one to volunteer to help out and was not afraid of getting her hands dirty. The second daughter-in-law was different. She was the life of the party. She loved attention and made sure she got it. Her favorite subject, like most of us, was herself. But she was strangely unavailable whenever there was work to do or when someone else needed help. As God´s chosen people, how should we strive to be?
Taking a good hard look at ourselves and where we stand is often a painful experience. We are living in an age where we like to congratulate ourselves instead of honestly checking our intentions. But God holy and dearly loves us. A good response to that love we have found in the Lord should be to make sure we are moved by His love. Like the daughters-in-law, we could make our Father happy or grieve Him by how we choose to be. Shall we pray that our selfishness, our pride, and our quick tempers, can be exchanged for hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience? Shall we approach the Lord and ask for His help?
Make us new. Change us from the self-oriented people we once were and make us into God-oriented ones, we pray!
