Not Simply Words

1st Thessalonians 1:5 Not Simply Words

because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.  1st Thessalonians 1:5  NIV

With many words, they taught her all the doctrines.  She was told everything you need to know about being a Christian.  She had gone to a religious school.  Her parents were believers.  But the world she found herself living in was not of a church community and services.  The man she married was not a Christian.  The words she was given as a child were not stronger than the influences of the world she lived in and made her living.  Is this all that we can expect of our religious experience?

Many people once went to church or were taught the words of the Bible.  But if we have only words, they will not be enough to sustain us when the world steps in to distract us.  What we need to experience when we hear of God and of His Son, Jesus Christ, is power.  We need to come to a very real awareness of the presence of our Lord.  We need to see the barriers of our universe blown away and to be left standing before the Divine.  Those who have found it in their hearts to seek out and be moved by the workings of the Holy Spirit will certainly be changed.  Are we sensing the power and presence of the Spirit in our lives?  Do we want to?

Dear Lord,

Give us more than words!  Give us You!  Let us be undone, humbled and astounded, but let us find You, we pray!

Amen
