Shown Mercy

1st Timothy 1:13 Shown Mercy

Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.  1st Timothy 1:13  NIV

In Venice Italy, you can stand on a stone bridge over the Rio di Palazzo canal and take pictures of the famous Bridge of Sighs.  Legend has it that the view from that bridge was the last sight of freedom that criminals had while being taken to prison.  But one day, the crowd of passing tourists was taking pictures of a group of men doing flips into the water between the gondolas.  Obviously, they had tried too much Italian wine in one of the cafés.  How were we to know that one of these hooligans would one day seek the mercy and forgiveness of God?  Are we aware of the mercy shown to us when we come to believe in Jesus Christ?

Not all of us have had our days of reckless abandon.  Some of us have lived fairly upstanding lives.  Not all of us have persecuted believers in Christ as Paul had done.  But all of us have removed God from the center of our attention at times.  Each one has looked to their own interest or promotion.  We are in need of mercy when our eyes or our hearts fall short of God´s will.  Each of us is in need of it daily.  Those who do not seek it, have no part with Jesus.  He went to the cross to pay for our failures.  We have been shown mercy.  Shall we start seeking His presence and movement in our lives as if it were the last thing we ever saw?

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the mercy You have shown us.  Forgive us for all the times we look to our own distractions, we pray!

Amen
