When Jesus sits down to teach, He lifts up certain kinds of people. His blessings rain down on the ones who cry, think little of themselves, or are humiliated. He encourages the simple-hearted, compassionate, and those feeling the sting of injustice. But isn´t this precisely the kind of people we try hard not to be?
A keen eye will see that God is directing us in a different direction than the one we currently hold to. Usually, we choose to make much of ourselves. It is our opinions, our intentions, or our ways. This, we have become experts in. We pamper ourselves all the time. This is what I want. This is what I feel I should have. This is what I believe. I think, I wish, and I, I, I! The list goes on.
Then we hear Christ´s sermon. If we can turn our ears away from what we usually listen to, we could ask for a change. Jesus will become our best Friend. We will need Him to shift our focus over to Him. Let us ask to be more like the ones who will receive the promises of God. Let us choose to suffer loss, or even shame, to gain our walk with Him
Dear Lord, let us pull in close and pay attention as You instruct us. There is so much to learn, even today. Let us feel the warmth of the moment as those did that day on the mountainside. Open our ears and our hearts to Your teaching. Let us become like those souls who burned and yearned for You and Your kingdom. Turn us into the blessed ones You described in the sermon that day on the mount. Amen
