His Accusation

And they set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.  Matthew 27:37 (ASV)

They have now crucified Jesus.  They had him hung up upon a cross to die.  All the rumors of Jesus being the promised Messiah seemed to have less chance of proving to be correct all the time.  Little did they know that all these things had been prescribed long ago.  Perhaps they had read of it or taught it to others, but sometimes we are slow to realize when things are actually taking place.

Now nearly everyone was getting caught up in ridiculing this man Jesus.  He had made bold statements about who He was and what He could do, but here He was, seemingly powerless and defeated.  His body was dirty, bloody and bruised.  He hung on His cross and had no more big words to say to anyone.

However, even through the joking and poking of words and insults, people were testifying to the fact of who He was.  The sign above His head clearly stated it.  Some were laughing that He would destroy the temple and in three days He would build it up again.  They couldn´t see that it was proving true at that very moment.

It is sad that so many were laughing and insulting our Lord.  But it is sadder still to hear ourselves today make less of our Lord.  There is a problem with being human, we cannot see clearly into the spiritual realms.  We constantly put first our own visual or practical human understanding first.  God has worked long and hard to help us understand that His world is there and it runs in many ways contrary or outside of our own world.  The laws and limitations we know and trust here do not have the same power there.  But we are slow to realize this.  We prefer to see with our eyes and weigh everything against our own personal experience, intelligence or accumulated knowledge.

So when any one of us scoffs at the Divine or the Heavenly Kingdom, we hurl our own insults at Jesus as He hangs on His cross.  He said it would be so and He told us to look away from our own interpretations.  He tells us that the Spiritual is the real, and we stand back and hold judgment upon that.  He says that things must be a certain way, and instead of looking to Him to see where He is going with it, we doubt or laugh it off.

Dear Jesus, once You hung upon a tree and people spoke little of You.  Now You sit at the right hand of the Father and do we really draw near to You?  Are we laughing at the things You have said?  Do we really listen to Your words and draw our hearts closer to You so that we may understand and see where You are going with all that we are experiencing?  There is still so much that blinds our eyes to Your ways.  Please help us and heal us so that our hearts may be lifted up in hope and faith. Whatever scene our eyes may be seeing, let us know that You are working here and You know what You are doing.  Draw us close by Your side to watch You unfold the Great Plan of our salvation, instead of laughing off even the smallest word You say.

Amen
