Preparing the Way

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”  Mark 1:1-2  (NIV)

Reading the old testament is like watching one of the great movie classics.  Grand scenes unfold where amazing things are happening on galactic scales.  God, the Almighty Creator reaches out to the human race in powerful ways to direct us to Him.  Great men and women turn from the common ways of their times to bow to, and connect with this Divine Entity.  We learn of right and wrong and here we find the teaching of mankind´s need for righteousness; this all-important need for mankind to adjust themselves to their Creator.

It is beautiful and epic, and should be read extensively by all.  Within the pages of the Old Testament we see the great plan for our race and the foreshadowing of what was to come.  The greatest message we find is the heralding of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

It is good news indeed.  People are separated from their God by immeasurable obstacles, by sin, interests, distractions and the opposition brought by darker forces.  Yet amongst all this tragedy shines a light of hope.  Jesus Christ, the Messiah!  A special person sent from God above with the ability to correctly adjust all that had fallen out of alignment with the Lord.  He will bring peace and hope for all who listen and come to Him.

Then came John the Baptist.  He was anointed with the sacred job of preparing the hearts and souls for the promised Messiah.  He was a voice which called attention not to itself, but cut through the hearts of the hearers and directed their attention above.  His ministry was foretold by the prophet Isaiah long before he was born.  He would be the one to pave the way for the Christ.  Yet he labored not for fame or fortune but because God had placed a burning message within his heart.  John the Baptist dedicated and gave up his life for bringing the hearts of as many as He could, before the throne of Grace.

Dear Lord, we are humbled and awed when we consider the great story of our race.  Thank you for sending your messengers with the sweet news of You.  Thank You for turning Your attention upon us, a stubborn and selfish race.  We would like to take this and every opportunity, to come to You today.  Open our hearts and souls that we may seek to have and to know this Messiah, the Son of God.  Prepare Your way inside of us and set our souls alight. We want to burn inside with a flame unquenchable for You.  Let it consume us as we feed off of every word Your message brings us.  Make our desire real and urgent and let us settle for nothing less, we pray.
