He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man. John 2:25 (NIV)
As we read the accounts written in the Gospel of John, does it seem as if someone were relating to us of things they experienced or saw themselves? Is this a wonderful witness to us? Can we hear almost first-hand experience of what Jesus Is like? Can we almost see through the eyes of the author? We are shown here that Jesus saw into the hearts of those whom He came into contact with? Is this a beautiful quality? Is it a worthy attribute for the Son of God to have? Does it make us respect Him more? Does it back up Jesus´ claims of being sent to us by the Father? Does it help demonstrate to us that God was with Him?
How many times have we read of situations where Jesus knew what was in the heart of another person? How do we feel about that? Is it a comforting thought? Or is it a little unnerving? Does it make us squirm a little when we try to picture it? Does it make us check our own heart´s intentions? Do we stop to ponder the ramifications of it? What if Jesus can read our minds right now? What if He can see what is going on inside of us? Can He see those things that we try to hide from ourselves? Can He easily see our good intentions and the ones where we like to think are good? If we secretly try to make it look like we are not thinking of ourselves, can He see that? How many times do we cover up our true intentions? How many times are we only trying to convince ourselves that we are doing the right thing? How many times are we really working towards some personal benefit or desire of our own?
When we approach Jesus today, how honestly are we doing that? Do we even stop to think about it? Are we coming to Him with the knowledge that He sees every secret of our soul? Do we think He only hears the words we choose to tell Him? When we use our flowery words and flattery, do we remember that He can see how much of our heart is behind those words? When we tell Him we love Him and want to find Him, do we realize that He can see if we are just spouting off a pleasing but rehearsed speech? When we say we are happy to spend this time with Him, should we think He cannot see that our hearts are already looking forward to some upcoming things we are planning to do? As we sit in a church pew, do we realize that He knows whether our thoughts are on Him or running off to other self-gratifying thoughts?
For those who truly want to find themselves by Jesus´ side, should His all-seeing quality be one of the most important issues to keep in mind constantly? Should we bring our fickle hearts to His attention? Should we ask His penetrating eyes to help us turn completely to Him? Can we ask Jesus Christ to use His vision of our hearts to help us come to Him in all honesty? Will He be the only One who can see when we are trying to trick ourselves?
We could go on throughout our lives never giving this heart-searching ability of Christ much thought. But would it be far more beneficial to us today, if we could embrace it and let Him use it to draw us ever closer to Him?
Dear Jesus, we believe in You! We believe You have some amazing qualities! We would like to ask You to draw close to us today! We would ask that You use Your ex-ray eyes to look into our souls. Expose all the deceit within us and those things we would try to hide from ourselves. Then show us how to come to You with our whole hearts? Please show us, we pray, how to love You with everything we´ve got!
Amen
