A Drink

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”  John 4:10 (NIV)

If we could get quiet enough and still enough, if we close our eyes and let the world around us disappear, can we sense God?  If we are genuine enough to turn our entire souls towards Him, do we find Him there?  Is there a great mysterious Presence that we can actually feel?  Is there an immense and dear Friend intimately close when we kneel to pray?  Do the barriers which separate God´s Realm and ours vanish when we draw our entire focus upon Him?  When we contemplate the Lord, are we aware of Someone guiding us as if we were walking hand in hand?  Does our heart seem like it will burst for all the love and care that is shared between us and our dear Companion?  Is it for still moments like these in the Presence of the Divine for which we yearn?  When our attention is torn away again to the preoccupations of the world, are we lost, lonely and thirsting?  Do we find ourselves just dying for the next moment where our souls will soar upwards in ecstasy as they realize the love and nearness of God?

Jesus is at a well.  He asks a woman for a drink.  Can we see ourselves in this story?  Has Jesus approached us?  Is He asking something of us?  Do we look around and see the incongruity of the situation?  Are we focusing upon the water?  Do we see the differences between people and races?  Do we focus upon any other thing than what Jesus is trying to tell us?  Is the Son of God really concerned about a cup of water?  Or has He just tried to open our eyes?  Is He gently yet insistently, trying to draw us closer to God?  Is He constantly working to tear down these barriers we place so that we may enter the Presence of the Lord?

What are we going to do right now?  Can we hear Him whispering something to us?  Is it to let go of our world?  Is He asking us to step with Him now into an unfamiliar land?  Is He asking us to take His hand and step beyond the distractions of our day?  Would He usher us into the Presence of the Divine?  Is He beckoning us to spend a moment with Him?  Could we be refreshed by being with Him right here and right now?  Would He quench our thirst?  Is He offering us a drink like none other we can imagine?  Is He placing before us the opportunity to drink from a well without end?

Dear Jesus, we hear Your sweet voice.  It speaks to us of curious and strange things.  We see the world around us.  But help us to accept Your offer right now!  Help us to take Your hand!  Lead us into the mysteries of being with You!  Give us this drink that You speak of!  Let us taste this Living Water!  Let us take it inside of us!  Let the sensation of Your Spirit wash over and through us today!  Let us drink full of Your Presence right now!
