For Our Good

For Our Good

‘But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.’  John 16:7 (NIV)

Jesus is preparing the next stage of God´s great plan.  He is instructing His followers.  He is telling us that He will leave the physical scene.  He will go to the Father.  Nobody wants to be separated from Jesus.  It saddens those who love Him to think that there could be this painful distance.  Now Jesus tells us that it is good and right that He does go.  He tells us why it is good.  He says that while He is here in our presence physically the Counselor cannot come to us.  But He says if He does go, then He will be able to send Him to us.  Now this may be hard for us to follow.  Why would Jesus say that anything in the world would be better than for Him to be with us personally?  Do we ever think about it?

Can we see from our text that these two vital steps are essential in our spiritual growth?

  • We must trust that Jesus knows we need God´s Spirit and that He has gone to make sure that we are able to have Him come to us.
  • The Holy Spirit is a blessing which should be sought will all the urgency and importance to make our faith in God grow.

To learn from Jesus will we have to realize that He is more informed than we are?  To gleam some beautiful truth must we step out in faith in Him?  If He says that one thing is better than the other, can we accept His words as worthy and true?  It may be difficult for us.  We do not live in an age that likes to value the word of others over our own opinions or intelligence.  But is this where faith comes in?  Is this where we show whether or not we believe in God?   Is this when we know that our faith in Jesus is more than wishful thinking or our flowery statements?  Is this when we follow in step behind Him as small children?  Is this when we humbly count on Him as our Shepherd and our Guide?

We cannot see our Counselor.  We know that Jesus went to send Him to us.  But how can we assure that He really has come?  To receive this great treasure Jesus says He will send what needs to be done on our end?  We need a Presence with us to hold us close to God in this crazy, fast-paced world we live in.  We need the counsel our Helper will bring.  We need Heaven to work in our favor to bring our self-regarding characters to God-regarding.  We need the Holy Spirit working in us come to know God and His Son.  So what is needed now?  How can we activate this promised Spirit of God?  How can we unleash the power of the Holy Spirit into our lives?

The call is now, for those who would hear.  Jesus knew it was worth it to go and make room for our blessed Counselor.  Are we making room for Him too?  Are we stepping out in faith?  Are we following Jesus this closely?  Are we looking for the movement of the Spirit in our lives?  Christ is working for our good, are we working with His efforts now?

Dear Jesus,

We sometimes try to make our faith so complicated.  We are in such a hurry to do something.  We forget that You are the Author and the Finisher of our faith.  In You all the preparations have been made.  Teach us to trust.  Teach us to hear Your instruction.  Teach us to actively seek all that You have promised.  As for the Holy Spirit, our Counselor You promised to send, let us gasp for Him as for our very next breath of life!

Amen
