Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Acts 5:3
Ananias and his wife stepped over the line. They thought that they could keep something secret from the Holy Spirit. God sees all. There is no need to deceive ourselves. We may try. We may even succeed most of the time. But it is only ourselves that we fool.
They thought they could sell their property, keep some of the money, and give what was left over to the Lord. Their sin was not against the poor but to God. Their affront to the Lord was acting as if He would not see that they refused to give everything to Him.
If this story does not strike fear within our hearts, then we have already been fooled. Satan has deceived us into thinking that we too can hide our hearts true leanings from God. Only repentance, turning to the Lord with our complete heart, and the constant Presence of Christ, will be able to save us from our self-oriented ways and worldly thoughts. Shall we ask the Lord for mercy, forgiveness and a close walk to save us from lying to Him today?
Dear Father in Heaven,
Forgive us for the secret leaning of our hearts. We are all guilty of thinking You will overlook our treason. But every time we think of ourselves instead of give our all unto You, we sin. You have paid for our trespass, but help us turn and change. Help us give everything to You without thought for ourselves we pray!
