That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made. Acts 7:41 (NIV)
With perfect clarity of hindsight we see how mankind has always been and how we are today. We cannot expect to change until we know the curse which plagues our race. We are wayward people. We fail to keep God in His rightful place of authority, proximity and devotion in our hearts. We have always let our attention slide off of Him and onto ourselves, to our distractions and to our own desires. Instead of choosing to focus our souls upon Him and seek Him with our entire hearts, we find something a little more down to earth. We choose to worship what we fancy and things that hands have made. Who on earth could possibly deny that they have not fallen to such a common form of treason?
In the desert they chose a golden calf. They wanted to return to the comfort and rich land of Egypt. In other times they chose the gods of the surrounding nations that sat in silence and requested no real adjustment of heart. In Jesus´ day they had rituals and rules. It was easier for them to worship their ways instead of seek a God Who lives and sees into the depths of their hearts. But Scriptures make it clear. You can have the Almighty or something less. What about us today? Do we turn to God or what hands have made?
Dear Lord,
Be our God today. Help us overcome our tendencies to look for something less that You! Let us turn and seek You now!
Amen
