Blood to Serve

Hebrews 9:14 blood to serve

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! Hebrews 9:14 NIV

The teenager followed the fading two-track road that wound between the hills. He spotted a rock-rabbit on an outcrop of boulders. Aiming his rifle, he fired, breaking the stillness of the morning. The small animal dropped over and tumbled down the rocks. The boy was happy that he had completed his chore and shot some food for the dogs on the ranch. But as he headed back towards the homestead, the animal began to move. The boy did not have bullets to spare. He waited for it to die. But his heart ached as the poor creature kicked in throws of death. When he could not take it any longer, he tried to strangle it. It did not work. In the end, he had to use a rock to still his prey. Finally, the animal hung lifelessly in his grip. Drops of blood fell from its mouth and the boy silently cried inside at his own cruelty. Have we learned an important lesson from the blood that was shed for us?

Jesus willfully gave His own life for us. In God´s infinite wisdom He gave us His Son to save us from our waywardness. If our hearts can recognize the harm we have done by turning our backs on God, then Christ´s blood can work a miracle for us. It can cleanse us from our senseless past. We can learn to live a life of love. We can come to serve the God of love. Shall we turn to Him now?

Dear Lord,

Forgive us from ever wandering from You and Your ways. Our guilt weighs us down and makes us need You more. Pick us up, cleanse us, and make us new to serve You, we pray!
