They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings–external regulations applying until the time of the new order. Hebrews 9:10 NIV
The boy did not want to go. Every Sunday morning his parents would wake him, give him breakfast, and then walk him down to the church. He had to sit in a section with all the other children that were forced to go to catechism too, so his parents normally did not stay. The service was usually an authoritative message of dos, don´ts and flowery impersonal speech. There was a lot of standing up and sitting down and many other rituals. Then came the dreaded class, where the children bored children fought or disturbed the others. For two years this process dragged on. It was torture. But the parents managed to get the children to go because they promised them a party and lots of gifts when they could finally partake of the Bread of Life. What is our religion a matter of?
The Bible tries so hard to spur us beyond our mere rituals and ideals. Christ came, calling men and women into a relationship with a near and real God. He did what was needed to justify us in the legal sense by following His Father´s will and paying His life for our failures. Now He has risen! He has gone to where God wants us to seek to be! External regulations were just a first step in getting us to where God is calling us! Shall we press forward now? Shall we ask the Lord for His help in making our faith into more than our earthly matters? Shall we ask God for infinite discoveries of Him and a most intense personal walk as we seek Him more and more?
Help us to turn from our earthly ways and from making our faith only a matter of rituals and ideals. Grow our walk with You into a burning love affair and absolute devotion, we pray!
