Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1 NIV
The teenager set off on his bike more than 20 minutes after the race began. One helper told him that because it was a 100-mile ride, he just might catch the other racers. So he did the best he could. But the ride was tough and hilly. At times he was confused as to the road they were supposed to take and had to search for the indications on the pavement. One section of the road had crossed a plague of frogs and he had to dodge the bodies of the ones that littered the road. He rode all morning by himself. He never did catch up to anyone from the race. He was unable to stay hungry and drive hard after the pack. He changed his pace and instead began to enjoy the scenery. He made it to the finish, but his race was quite different from that of the rest. How are we running ours?
God has a race marked out for each of us here on earth. We can read of the lives of those who have followed Christ before us. Their pilgrimages were marked by steep climbs, many curves, and rough terrain. But they paid no attention to the difficulties or the things that would hinder. They were looking forward to something. They were running their race for the Lord. Their will was to have His will as their driving force. So, whether there is a great cloud of witnesses or none that we can perceive, let us run our race to the Lord with Him ever before us. Let our hearts thrill with the thought that we are drawing nearer to our Savior each day!
Help us set our eyes on You and enjoy the ride. Let us focus on running our race with You, to You, and for You, we pray!
