No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 NIV
A boy was doing his chores in the backyard one day when his two brothers came with a box of matches. They convinced him to leave his duties and come with them into a field behind the house. The oldest boy started lighting matches and tossing them into the dry grass along the path. The younger ones would see the flames and stomp out the fires in a bit of a panic. This seemed like fun until one time they turned around to find that they had missed one. The fire was already too large for them and they went running home for help. The fire department arrived in time to extinguish the fire before it raged through a trailer park where a lot of retired people lived. The children waited in terror to find out what their discipline would be. Has God´s correction trained us for eternity?
Oh so often, we turn away from putting God first. We start entertaining thoughts and activities that please us now. We do not always see the danger in whatever distraction it is at the time. But our Father will surely try to bring us back to seeking Him and His Kingdom. Shall we pray that whatever method the Lord sees fit, that we immediately clothe ourselves in repentance? Shall we ask that we learn through each sharp reminder to keep close to Him? If we truly learn to keep the Lord in everything we think of or do, then His correction will have paid off. Shall we turn to Him now, and let our Savior teach us to follow Him with every step we take?
Help us learn from the times we get distracted from You! Let our pain and remorse hold us closer to You and more determined to follow You all throughout each day, we pray!
