Refusing Who Speaks

Hebrews 12:25 Refusing Who Speaks

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? Hebrews 12:25 NIV

It was a big day for the children. But it was not the children who were chattering amongst themselves. The kids were all seated at the front of the church near the speaker. The ones who were making all the noise were the members of the family and friends who came to the ceremony that day. They kept whispering or talking to each other. Several times the priest had to stop what he was saying to tell the crowd to be quiet. The people who wanted to hear the sermon also tried to “shhhh” the inconsiderate noise-makers, but it was no use. Could we ever be guilty of ignoring the voice of Christ as He calls us towards some Heavenly purpose?

Jesus came to call our attention away from ourselves. He went quite far to try to get our focus back on God. Some of us may think we are listening to Him because we are seated in a pew at church. However, forming part of a congregation does not always mean that our ears or our hearts are open to what the Lord wants us to hear. It takes a focused person and a humble heart to hear the Word of Christ in this noisy world today. Jesus has a message for each one of us right now, but if we are not straining to hear His voice, then we will surely miss His direction for us. Could today be the perfect opportunity for us to stop what we are doing and draw near to Jesus? How about asking the One who speaks to us if there are any parts of our heart that could be turned more towards Him?

Dear Lord,

Teach us to listen for You over the noise around us. Let us hear Your whisper and be thrilled to follow Your will, we pray!

Amen
