They had always dreamed of buying a house. Years went by though, and they moved from rental house to rental. All they wanted to do was to settle down and grow some roots. They looked for their opportunity. They saved as best they could. Then, one day, some friends offered their old house to rent with the option to buy later as they had the money. This looked like it was finally their chance to have the house they always wanted. So, they signed the papers. Have we ever had our heart set on things more than on drawing near our Lord?

What was in the couple´s heart was not meant to be. The stable jobs were not so stable and their first child was born. They had to make the difficult decision to move closer to the family. We learn from the written Word, that these passing things that our hearts go out to will not last. They were never intended to replace God in our hearts. Our souls were designed to love the Lord more than any other possession or gain. Things apart from God will come to an end. If we do not come to know Him, if we do not lift Him up in our hearts, we have left all our hopes hanging on our other “things!” Let us make an investment in eternity. Let us choose to set our hearts on the Lord first. Then, He will be able to give us gifts when they do not steal away from our relationship or walk with Him!

Dear Lord,

Take these hearts of ours today. Never let us want anything more than we want to be with You and see Your smile, we pray!
