“I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.’ John 5:24-25 (NIV)
What is all this talk of hearing? Jesus states that whoever hears His word and believes in the One who sent Him has crossed from death to life. Now the Saviour proclaims again that even the dead will hear Him. But what does He mean by hearing? Is He talking of the auditory perception of sounds? Is He saying someone is physically detecting a noise, a voice, or a message? Or is He saying that some people will actually receive His message? Is Jesus making a distinction between those who are concerned with the detecting of audible sounds or written messages, and those who are being reached by that message? Could our Saviour be pointing us to the fact that some people are touched and moved by what He has to say? Might He be saying that there are even now there are those who hear His words and that message sparks a response deep within the heart? Are these the kind of people who might be referred to when it is said actually HEAR?
Jesus says that a time has come when even the dead will hear. Could He be referring to us? Is it possible that we walk around as though we are alive, but we haven´t begun to imagine what it is like to truly have life springing up inside of us? Could we be dead to the entire spiritual world which lies just outside of our powers to detect? Might our senses have been deadened to the movements of our God? Could we have lost the importance, the vitality and the life that comes from knowing the Lord? Are there people even now who upon hearing the voice of Jesus and His words, have felt their spirits quickened to new life? Have some come into an awakening of soul which springs out in powerful and living manifestations? Has faith come alive through hearing Jesus Christ? Could these be the ones who HEAR Jesus? Are these the ones who truly believe the One Who sent Him?
Right now we can choose. We can accept the words of Jesus as uplifting and appealing to us. We may contemplate them with a certain degree of accordance and satisfaction. But who is there who will allow those words to sink in? Who is letting the words of Jesus sink deep enough to spark a response within their spirit? Who is moved far enough to awaken their soul and set it alight with a vibrant and healthy desire to come closer to God? Who can say that their soul is filling with a living spring of life which draws us into the very Presence of the Divine? Who is HEARING Jesus now?
