All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. Hebrews 11:13 NIV
Two men on an expedition on a lake far out in the wilds of Africa needed to stop for the night. The dangers were far too many to count to be out there on the water in the darkness. Finally, they came near a small town on the hills on one bank. They tied up their boat and considered making a camp. But they could hear villagers somewhere in the forest close by singing and dancing. So, they decided it would be safer if they stayed in their tiny dingy in case they were discovered and needed to escape. One of them rummaged around and found his pistol. They had to take turns sitting up on watch while the other one slept. The dark night seemed to drag on forever. Have we ever had to admit that we are only strangers here and that life for us is only by faith in God?
Just pick up your Bible and read of nearly anyone written there. The saints of old had to hold on to the promises of God while in their earthly life was full of darkness and trials. Any number of troubles or threats faced these humble believers. They did not need to know how their night would end. They just clung to their faith in the character and presence of the Lord. We have a chance to exercise faith too. We don’t need to run off and find a weapon to hold on to. We already have the best defense available to mankind. If we will exercise our faith and place our entire lives in God´s hands, then all will be well with our soul for all eternity to come.
Give us faith that will sustain us and focus us on You through whatever our darkness may threaten us with, we pray!
