Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 1st Peter 5:2 NIV
The parents of three boys decided to undertake a business venture. The got the money to build a few houses to sell. Their boys would be contracted for the work. But they were slightly inexperienced. They needed someone with more experience to help them with some of the technical parts. A classmate and friend of one of the boys fit the bill. He left his usual crew to come and help them. He could have come and lorded his experience over them. He could have insisted on the highest salary. But instead, he came to work bringing his eagerness to get to work and his wider base of experience. The work proceeded well and the houses were all built well. What attitude do we bring as we come in to serve?
Whether we know it or not, there are others who will receive something from us. “But we are not preachers!” we may say. That does not matter. Our lives touch those of others. These are the ones who are under our care. We could puff ourselves up. We could ask for respect. Or, we could win far more respect if we seek an attitude of service. If we show the world that we care and are ready to help, then it will be noticed. We can look for ways to ease the burdens of those around us instead of seeking our own gain. Who would like to join God´s crew and willingly help too?
Dear Lord,
Teach us Your ways. Give us humble hearts that leap at the chance to help others. Let us reflect You love always, we pray!
Amen
