Who Takes Refuge In God

Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned. Psalm 34:22

High up in the mountains, where few people go, people have built structures for emergency use. These are refuges. If you are climbing, and the weather gets bad, you can go there for shelter. Those who have been in a life-threatening situation know. Finding that someone has provided for our most urgent needs brings immense relief. The more of our lives on the line, the more relieved we are when we find that refuge.

Christians talk about finding safety in God. We even talk about our lives quite often. But few of us see our plight anywhere near as serious as this. We do not compare our situation to a mountain climber stuck in a blizzard in some lonely wilderness.

We could not be further from the truth. The truth is, our situation here in life is far more dangerous than we imagine. The adventurer out in a storm could lose a limb to frostbite. They could even lose their lives. But we all are weathering a storm that we cannot see. The life we stand to lose goes far beyond these frail bodies that house our souls. God wants to make us into beings that will enjoy His presence forever. We are mere embryos of what we could become in Him. We just need to find safety now in His embrace. Then we will have nothing to worry about for endless futures to come.

So let us stop trusting in the sunny skies and fluffy clouds where we are plodding today. A storm is brewing that we cannot foresee. We will be caught in conditions far out of our control if we do not have a refuge for our souls. Let us heed the warnings. Let us seek safety as close to our Savior as we can get. Let us edge in close to the only Guide that can bring us safely home.
