At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9-11 (NIV)
Wonderfully exciting times, the mighty Spirit was working in the hearts of the people. John the Baptist was spreading a good word of preparing souls for God. Sincere people were going to hear him and as they were moved to action towards God, they were washed in the river Jordan. It was to this scene that Jesus went also. It may seem strange, that the very Son of God would humbly go to see the Baptist and allow him to perform the ritual cleaning. However, Jesus knew what He was doing.
We can see sin to be a separating of our wills from that of God the Father. Each of us has had to find atonement for our inherited natural ways and seek the Savior´s grace. We need to be cleansed and changed from our previous self and renewed in Christ. Jesus paid what lacked in our sinful nature by dying on the cross, and now we are baptized to begin that washing and cleaning from our ways to His. But Jesus, why did He need to go through with this process?
Our Savior chose to be baptized. He let John wash Him in the river as a symbol of His obedience and complete envelopment in the Father. He already had the nature of the Father running through His veins, but He could still be tempted and could choose which nature to follow. It greatly pleased the Father when His Son showed His love and entire commitment of heart and soul and was baptized. God told Him so with a voice and the Holy Spirit descending on His Son like a dove.
Jesus may have miraculously come from divine essence and become a man. However His tie to the Father and His ability to hear Him and know what His Father wanted was fervently sought. Jesus never did anything as you and I do, He performed every act and spoke every word for us. All that He did or said was to set an example and to instruct us and help us find a Way back to our place in God. So when Jesus performed His humble expression of washing in the Spirit and will of God, we can see His whole-hearted and the purest intentions to uphold God. We can see Him directing our hearts and showing us that it pleases the Father when He sees genuine souls turning their hearts to Him without restraint.
Dear Jesus, thank You for coming. Thank You for everything You have done for us. Thank You for showing us what kind of nature to seek. Please help us as we feel the need to come unto You and the Father. Give us we pray, a baptism of Spirit. Flow over us with Your nature and wash away that nature we had before that followed our ways and not Yours. Cleanse us to pure intentions of seeking and finding ourselves in You so that we may glorify You and the Father. Be pleased with our offering today and send down upon us Your Spirit to purify and guide us unto You.
